of scarlet macaws in Costa Rica.
Releases of captive bred, confiscated,
and donated birds will be performed
over a ten-year period (1999-2009)
with the goal of establishing a
free flying, reproducing population
of macaws. |

| A
variety of techniques have been
considered, seven of which have
been tried. These include steel
and aluminum leg bands, colored
plastic bands, wing tags, feather
bleaching, radio telemetry, feather
cutting and temporary face marking. |

El Gobierno costarricense ha promulgado
leyes y decretos para proteger la
vida silvestre. Sin embargo, estos
esfuerzos no han surtido los efectos
deseados y factores negativos sobre
nuestro patrimonio natural (Ej.
tala de bosques naturales, cacería
ilegal, comercio de vida silvestre)
siguen actuando (IJSA 1998; Ramírez
y Guillén 1999, Drews 2000a).
